A Harbourside Husband-and-Wife Team Launches Global Art Software from Their Backyard Studio
From the quiet harbourside village of Kiama in New South Wales, a retired couple has turned a personal need into a powerful new tool for artists and galleries around the world.
Peter Smith, a retired former CEO of a media and software company, and his wife Frances, a respected ceramic artist and art educator, have spent years quietly refining a system to manage the growing demands of a working artist's life. The result is Artflow Pro, a new web-based application now launching globally.
Their collaboration started simply enough. Frances needed a better way to keep track of her artworks-where they were, what they were titled, what materials were used, whether they had been exhibited or sold, and what images and documents accompanied each piece.
"I was overwhelmed by the admin," said Frances. "Every exhibition, every consignment, every proposal meant starting from scratch. It was distracting and exhausting. I just wanted to be in the studio, not stuck at the computer."
Peter began building a custom FileMaker database to help. Over time, it evolved-driven by real-life use in Frances's ceramic practice, feedback from galleries, and Peter's experience in building digital systems that are simple, elegant, and human-focused.
"We never set out to build a product," Peter explained. "We just needed a system that worked. But after a while, we realised: if this helped Frances, it could help other artists too."
Over the past 18 months, Peter coordinated a small international team of developers based in Ukraine, Pakistan, and India-all from the couple's home office overlooking their backyard orange tree.
Artflow Pro now offers artists and galleries a way to:
- Capture and document artworks on mobile
- Add images, titles, pricing, materials, and descriptions
- Track proposals, gallery consignments, and exhibition history
- Instantly publish portfolios to websites, social media, e-commerce stores, and even POS systems
- Receive notifications when artworks are sold
It's both an artist's tool and a gallery's dream-bringing clarity, consistency, and professionalism to creative businesses, without the friction of traditional admin systems.
"We see Artflow Pro as a quiet enabler," said Peter. "It's not about disruption or chasing trends. It's about giving artists more control and giving galleries better tools to do their work."
Artflow Pro is now live at www.artflow-pro.com, and the first 100 who sign up become Founding Members , who will receive early access, onboarding support, access to live webinars, and priority updates as we grow.
